YOU’RE INVITED TO WORKSHOPS WITH THE VICTORIAN ABORIGINAL LEGAL SERVICE (VALS) & HUMAN RIGHTS LAW CENTRE (HRLC) TO LEARN ABOUT HUMAN RIGHTS & HAVE YOUR SAY ABOUT HOW GOVERNMENT SHOULD DELIVER HUMAN RIGHTS ON THE GROUND!

The day will be opened by Dr Alf Bamblett who is CEO at the Victorian Aboriginal Community Services Association Limited (VACSAL), current President of the Aborigines Advancement League and sits on the Board of Directors at VALS. Civil Law Solicitor, Chris Howse, will also deliver an introduction and talk about his role at VALS. Mr Howse will stay for the duration of the day to help with any civil law related questions. HRLC staff will then provide an introduction to human rights in Australia and provide information about how the days workshops can be used to help the Koori community tell Government how human rights should be realised.

POLICE USE OF FORCE PROJECT

This workshop will be run for those who want to learn about and contribute to the Police Use of Force Project run by the HRLC. The project seeks to provide a framework for a human rights-based approach to regulating police use of force in Victoria. We would like to speak with members of the Koori community who have been affected by police practices and about whether the approach we are recommending is appropriate. All discussions will be kept strictly confidential.

NATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS ACTION PLAN

The final workshop will provide information about the Commonwealth Government’s National Human Rights Action Plan (NHRAP). The NHRAP is going to have actions in it which are expected to address human rights issues facing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The workshop will assist participants in getting ready to engage with the Commonwealth Government’s future consultation process. This workshop will consider human rights issues facing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in Victoria and how community can promote change and enhance human rights protections. For more information go to the NHRAP website www.humanrightsactionplan.org.au.
